Essential Guide - Travel Advice

Spending Money

You will need to bring some spending money for your day to day personal expenses. This is to cover buying souvenirs, presents, snacks and drinks, the occasional odd meal and optional activities etc. Remember the Highlights included in your trip are included in your trip price along with the vast majority of meals. We feel a budget of £10 per day will easily cover your day to day expenses. If you plan to buy large quantities of souvenirs and ship them home we advise to budget extra for this.

A rough guide of prices to help you budget your spending money–

Beer $1 - $1.50
Cigarettes $2.50
Bottle of Wine $10.00
Can of Carbonated Drink $0.80
Bottle of drinking water $1.00
Average evening meal out on Zanzibar $8.00
Average evening meal out in Swakopmund $12.00
Chocolate bar – imported $1.00
Chocolate bar – local $0.40
Malawi Chair – medium size $30
Printed Batik $3 / 5.00
Masaai Jewellery $5.00

Your spending money should be brought out in a mixture of cash and travelers cheques in either USD or Sterling. Note - several African countries do not trade in pre 2000 USD notes, if you are bringing dollars mix the denominations up, check the dates of each note and have plenty of 50’s and/or 100’s – you will get a better exchange rate for these notes. Small denomination notes are excellent for paying for gifts. A good wad of one dollar bills will ease haggling.
